Modification of and Addition of Floors to a Townhouse
The three-story townhouse –built in 1879 at St. Johanns-Platz in Basel– is the last reminder of an originally homogenously designed street, yet nowadays located amidst a row of five-story houses. The intention of the project was to soften the volumetric imbalance between this property and its higher adjacent buildings by the complementation of the roof structure. On the one hand, the memories of the original street from the 19th century should be conserved, on the other, the altered modern requirements should additionally become visible. The addition of floors distinguishes the unique position of the old premises in the altered urban context and redefines it as an intermediate element between the neighboring buildings. The position amidst the somewhat menacing fire walls is not negated, but rather used as potential and interaction space and also visualized toward the interior.
